About Mount Athos

Mount Athos

Mount Athos is a significant monastic community situated on the Athos Peninsula in Greece. Known as the 'Holy Mountain,' it's an autonomous territory home to 20 monasteries and around 2,000 monks. The area spans 130 square miles, dominated by the 6,670-foot tall Mount Athos, the highest point on the peninsula. Although not a U.S. protected place, its status as a historic and spiritual site is unparalleled. The landscape consists of rugged, forested mountains, providing a serene backdrop to religious life and pilgrimage. For over 1,000 years, it has been a center for Orthodox Christian monasticism, and access is highly regulated to preserve its sanctity. Wildlife includes diverse bird species and native mammals, thriving in the undisturbed habitat. While women are not permitted, male visitors require a special permit to explore its spiritual and natural beauty. Visitors can partake in guided hikes through verdant trails revealing panoramic vistas, historical frescoes, and a glimpse into monastic traditions.
